The current state of South African Jewry internally is very healthy, and the Chief Rabbi continues to encourage all our Jewish educational institutions and our youth movements to be knowledgeable about our Jewish heritage and to enhance Jewish commitment.
A diminishing community in quantity, South African Jewry in terms of its Jewish quality is the finest in the world, and Chief Rabbi Harris's efforts help to guarantee the high-level continuity of the community. He travels the length and breadth of the community and involves himself fully with all aspects of the religious and cultural life of the community. These efforts are not only of value in their own right, but are crucial if South African Jewry is to offset the adverse effects of emigration by strengthening the Jewish communal loyalties of those who have courageously decided their future is in this country. In his representational role, the Chief Rabbi is close to Government at national and provincial levels. He is a leader of the inter-faith movement, which recently brought political leadership together with religious leadership at the Moral Summit, and this promises much to make reliability and accountability the order of the day and to stamp out corruption. Chief Rabbi Harris is a driving force regarding Tikkun - " helping to put things right" - whose projects, utilising Jewish skills and expertise in the areas of welfare, education and agriculture, are increasingly successful and of real benefit to the majority population of this country. |
